10 Most Dangerous Intersections and Streets for Pedestrians in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a car-centric city, and specific streets and intersections pose significantly higher risks to pedestrians. Many of these areas also experience a high volume of car accidents. Factors such as poor road design, inadequate lighting, speeding, and limited crosswalk access contribute to making these locations particularly hazardous for traveling on foot. In 2024, 169 pedestrians lost their lives in Los Angeles.

Figueroa Street and 7th Street

The intersection of Figueroa and 7th Street is particularly hazardous for pedestrians attempting to cross. Figueroa Street, in general, experiences severe traffic congestion during rush hours and speeding during off-peak hours, making it one of the most hazardous streets in Los Angeles.

Slauson Avenue and South Figueroa

Over the past four years, seven pedestrians have been hit in the crosswalks of this intersection in the Vermont section of South Los Angeles. Proximity to freeway off-ramps is a common feature of some of the most dangerous intersections in Los Angeles, and Slauson Avenue and South Figueroa is no exception.

Slauson Avenue and Western

This intersection has an unusually high pedestrian accident rate as they need to cross five lanes of traffic. Speeding is a significant issue at Slauson and Western. The faster the vehicle is at the time of impact, the more likely the pedestrian will be severely injured or killed.

Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue

Hollywood Boulevard overall has one of the highest pedestrian accident rates in Los Angeles. At the busy Highland Avenue intersection, near popular tourist attractions such as the TCL Chinese Theater, and its vibrant nightlife, all contribute to the high accident rate.

West Florence Avenue and South Vermont Avenue

This high-traffic area in South Los Angeles is notorious for congestion due to the large number of pedestrians and buses in the vicinity. It has long been one of the most dangerous intersections for overall collisions in the city.

Imperial Highway and Vista del Mar

Located near Dockweiler Beach, this intersection consistently ranks among the highest in Los Angeles (and the state of California) for the number of car crashes, including pedestrian collisions.

Santa Monica Boulevard

The city of Santa Monica recently conducted a safety study to identify and address pedestrian accidents occurring on Santa Monica Boulevard. Among the most perilous intersections are Santa Monica Boulevard and Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. There is dense traffic in this commercial area, along with heavy vehicle traffic. On many sections of Santa Monica Boulevard, pedestrian safety is further compromised by cars frequently blocking crosswalks.

East Manchester Avenue and Avalon Boulevard

This intersection is known for its poor pedestrian infrastructure, which is further exacerbated by its proximity to the 110 Freeway. The sheer volume of commercial trucks passing through means pedestrians are often at risk.

Balboa Boulevard and Nordhoff Street

Because it is located near the Northridge campus of California State University, this intersection is frequently used by students traveling to and from campus throughout the day. It is also close to popular shopping centers, increasing foot and motor vehicle traffic.

Sunset Boulevard

Sunset Boulevard, made famous by the classic film of the same name, winds through some of Los Angeles’ busiest neighborhoods on its way to the Pacific Ocean and presents serious risks for pedestrians. The intersection at Vine Street is especially hazardous, partly due to the heavy foot traffic from tourists. Low-visibility crosswalks, traffic congestion, billboards, distracted driving, and motorists accelerating through lights all contribute to a dangerous environment for those on foot.
