Head Injuries from Fall Accidents

Falls are the second leading cause of head injuries in the United States. A common reason for emergency room visits, head injuries from falls can result in skull fractures, scalp wounds, and bleeding or bruising of the brain. Regarding long-term consequences, traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the most serious outcomes of a fall accident.

If you or someone you love suffered a head injury due to the negligence of another party, you may have grounds for legal action. To discuss your slip and fall injuries and the circumstances of your accident, contact The Salamati Law Firm today for a free conference. We can answer your questions, assess your case, and outline the best steps moving forward.

Types of Head Injury From Fall Accidents

Trauma to the head from a fall accident can cause open or closed injuries. A closed head injury means it is non-penetrating, and the skull remains intact. By contrast, an open head injury describes trauma that breaks through the skull and damages brain tissue. Both types of slip and fall head injuries can have severe consequences and necessitate urgent medical treatment.

Some of  the more common types of head injuries include the following:

Hematoma

A hematoma is a clotting of blood that collects around damaged blood vessels. It develops between the skull and the protective lining of the brain or the actual surface of it. Leaking blood exerts pressure on brain tissue and can be life-threatening. If not treated quickly, a brain hematoma can cause loss of consciousness, seizures, paralysis, and even death.

Edema

Edema is the medical term for swelling. When you hit your head hard on an object, delicate brain tissue can swell, causing a dangerous increase in pressure. This increased intracranial pressure may hamper blood flow and–if left untreated–cause a host of problems ranging from vision loss to permanent brain damage.

Concussion

Concussions are common slip and fall injuries. They occur when the brain is jolted back and forth inside the skull. Headaches, dizziness, and drowsiness are common signs, but some concussions have no symptoms. While mild concussions resolve on their own, it’s crucial to seek medical treatment.

Contusion

A contusion–or bruising–on the brain is often associated with a concussion. It typically causes swelling and bleeding inside the brain where the skull was struck. Contusions may result from skull fractures or hard blows to the head, causing epidural or subdural hematomas.

Skull Fracture

A fall can also cause a break or crack in the cranial bones. The type of treatment relies upon the depth and extent of the fracture. Severe skull fractures can cause cerebrospinal fluid leakage, contusions, and infection.

Lacerations

The scalp has a high concentration of blood vessels near the skin’s surface. Even minor cuts on the head will bleed heavily. Deeper lacerations can become dangerous and require sutures to prevent excess blood loss.

Signs of Brain Injury from Fall Accidents

Not every head injury produces obvious symptoms like bleeding or loss of consciousness. After any serious fall or blow to the head, it’s important to see a doctor for a full medical evaluation. Imaging tests with MRIs or CT scans are often required to reach a definitive diagnosis.

The symptoms of a head injury after a fall can vary greatly. Watch for the following signs:

  • Lightheadedness
  • Severe headaches
  • Unequal pupil size
  • Problems balancing
  • Unusual fatigue
  • Blurry vision
  • Nausea
  • Slurred speech
  • Confusion
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Sensitivity to light or noise
  • Temporary loss of consciousness
  • Increased reaction time
  • Weakness in the legs or arms
  • Irritability and behavior changes
