Am I Required to Have Motorcycle Specific Insurance?

You must have motorcycle-specific insurance, as a standard auto insurance policy will not cover your bike. All motorcyclists are required to have bodily injury and property damage liability coverage.

What Does Minimum Liability Insurance Cover?

Liability insurance pays for the medical costs and property damage sustained by other vehicle occupants if you are at fault. However, it does not cover any of the medical costs or property damage that you incur if you are responsible for the crash.

This minimum coverage will cover the following in a motorcycle accident for which you are responsible:

  • $15,000 for injuries sustained by one person
  • $30,000 for any injuries incurred by more than one person
  • $5,000 for any property damage sustained in the crash

Additional Types of Coverage That We Recommend

You are technically abiding by the law by only carrying liability insurance. However, the financial and emotional stress of only purchasing minimum coverage can be overwhelming. To protect the financial interests of you and your family, our Los Angeles motorcycle accident lawyers at Salamati Law strongly suggest that you obtain the following additional forms of coverage:

  • Liability coverage for guest passengers on your bike: Not all minimum liability policies cover this, and we all know how much more fun it can be to go for a cruise with another person.
  • Comprehensive and collision coverage: No matter who is at fault in the crash, collision coverage will pay to fix or replace your bike if you are in an accident. Comprehensive coverage will pay for damage to your motorcycle not caused by an accident, such as natural disasters, vandalism, or theft.
  • Gap insurance: If your motorcycle is stolen or totaled, comprehensive and collision coverage will only cover the present, fair market value of your bike no matter what you paid for it at the time of purchase. For example, if you paid $20,000 for a motorcycle four years ago, it may only be worth $12,500 at the time of the crash. This is all your insurance policy will pay. To protect yourself, you have the option of purchasing gap insurance to essentially fill in the additional $7,500. This is the gap between what you paid for the motorcycle and its current fair market value.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured (UM/UIM) Coverage: A staggering amount of motorists on the road drive without any form of insurance. Still, others only obtain the bare minimum coverage. Injuries sustained in motorcycle crashes, whether caused by speeding, drunk driving, or unsafe left-hand turns, are often severe and life-changing. It is easy to exceed $15,000 in medical bills. No matter how strong your claim is, if the other driver either does not have insurance or your costs exceed the limits of their policy, you will have no way to recover full financial compensation unless you purchase UM/UIM coverage. If you do, this coverage will provide a safety net for you and your loved ones should you sustain a serious injury.
  • Medical payments coverage: This coverage will supplement your health insurance. However, it may have a steep deductible, co-pays that you are struggling to afford, or limits to your coverage. If this is the case, then medical payments coverage can help you pay the bills and co-pays and enable you to focus on what is most important: healing from your injuries.
